Where no Mind Mint has gone before...

As a first generation Trekkie (Kirk will always be my captain), I invested two minutes watching the trailer for the upcoming Picard series on CBS All Access. The trailer includes this quote from Picard:

“The past is written. But we are left to write the future.”

While I hate to contradict the former commander of a Galaxy-class starship, I have to say Jean-Luc is wrong: the past is not written. The past happened, but what gets written is history. And history can always be rewritten.

Historians (and we’re all historians) make sense of the past by selecting and omitting events to tell a specific story. While we can’t change the past, we can change the story we tell about it. Rewriting our personal history can be a powerful tool in helping us shape our future.

Make it so.
